Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 25 April 2008

Tenants pick up bill

• THE front-page article (Electricity bills shock, April 11), suggests that EDF wants to charge leaseholders exclusively for replacing electrical cables connecting individual meters to the electricity supply on council estates.
In reality, the unfair and overpriced charges for often poor-quality work and services from the numerous privatised companies that now grace our estates (supported, let’s not forget, by the Lib Dems locally and New Labour nationally) are picked up by tenants and leaseholders alike.
Charges for work on council homes (as one assumes is the case regarding EDF) are paid from accounts holding tenants’ rents. Councillor Terry Stacy must be aware that the EDF charge will impact equally on tenants and leaseholders. By failing to reflect this reality, it suggests the Lib Dems are resorting to the tired old line that “tenants are once again getting something for nothing”. Shame on them!

ELECTRICITY meters are the property of the electricity suppliers, which are quick enough to replace them if there is any question of malfunction.

Surely, the sealed main fuses and the cabling on the supplier’s side of the meters are properly a matter for the suppliers. If EDF has reason to replace the cables then it should initiate the work, carry it out and pay the cost. What we should be asking is: just why is the work being done at all?
