Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 18 April 2008

Market in danger

I WOULD like to alert residents to a meeting of Islington Council’s south area planning committee on Monday, April 28, when the application by a developer to strip the interior of the Mall in Camden Passage will be decided.
The meeting begins at 7.30pm at Islington town hall in Upper Street but we are asking objectors to turn up 15 minutes earlier.
For those unaware, the Mall – a Grade II-listed tramshed and the jewel in the crown of Camden Passage – has been under threat for some time. Up to 40 small, independent businesses are threatened with eviction and had to sign an agreement that they will move out at a month’s notice.
Many of us believe that losing the Mall will spell the end of Camden Passage as a thriving, world-renowned antiques market and Islington landmark.
Local support of the mall has been amazing and more than 500 people have signed a petition presented to Downing Street and to Lib Dem council leader Councillor James Kempton.
Finally, I would like to thank the Tribune for its magnificent support of our campaign.
