Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 18 April 2008

Vote for this tree

• THE latest edition of the Islington Now newspaper from the Lib Dem council invites residents to nominate their favourite tree and email their choice to islingtonnow@islington.gov.uk.
I would like to suggest that all residents in my ward (St Peters), or indeed residents everywhere, write to the council and nominate the very fine 70-year-old landmark London plane tree on Rheidol Green as their favourite.
The council has given permission to cut down this tree, to make way for extra housing units on the redeveloped Packington estate.
This tree is only under threat because it is on council-owned land, and therefore does not require a tree protection order. If it was on private land and protected, the council would never have dared give permission. This tree has unmeasurable public amenity value and must not be destroyed. Vote for it now.
Cllr Martin Klute
Labour, St Peters ward
