Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 11 April 2008

Any tales of gallows?

• I AM a producer working on a programme for BBC Radio about what it is like living close to one of north London’s most famous buildings  –  Pentonville Prison – and we are seeking people who have memories about living near the building, today or back in the past.
I know a lot of your readers must know the prison mainly from the outside, but occasionally no doubt from the inside too, and wonder if they would share memories or experiences for the programme?
We want to find out if you can hear noises from inside the prison on the outside and vice versa. Also, what is it like when there are protests, or escapes? Have they seen men on the roof or protesters outside? What is it like when families come to visit?
Maybe people throw things over the wall? We have heard of people putting children on their shoulders to wave to their dad. Is this true?
Apparently, the prison was used as a training place for executions years ago – and one man commented that he could hear the gallows. Could this be true? Does anyone still remember those days? Anyone willing to have a chat can leave a message for the programme makers, Sara and Alan, on 020 7765 5557
or email sara-jane.hall@bbc.co.uk
It would take only a few minutes. We’d be delighted to hear from you.
SARA JANE HALL
Senior producer, BBC Radio
