Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 4 April 2008

Bags of alternatives

• I WAS pleased to hear that Marks and Spencer is going to charge 5p per plastic bag.
I was shopping there only the other week when my purchases were put, rather speedily, into plastic bags as soon as they were swiped through the till, and the assistant looked a bit bemused when I said I wanted to repack the goods in my own reusable bags.
You almost have to learn to say: “I have my own bag thanks” before making a purchase these days.
I hope shopkeepers will get the message, and either follow the lead of Marks and Spencer and start charging for plastic bags, or at least ask people if they really need one, rather than just assuming they do.
The Lib Dem-run council gives out free cloth bags in our Green Living Centre, in Upper Street, and if you carry one with you most of the time you shouldn’t need to be accumulating an endless stream of plastic bags.
And if you really do need to use them, don’t throw them away to landfill, keep them in a cupboard and use them again!
CLLR LUCY WATT
Lib Dem, Canonbury ward
