Talks as rubbish strike looks set to be averted

THE threat of a rubbish collection strike in Islington appeared to recede this week after the new company responsible for the borough’s waste offered to discuss union demands.
ICSL Enterprise also offered to support a move by the union to reduce the number of low-paid untrained agency staff and ultimately employ workers on a permanent basis.
Government health and safety inspectors are investigating both London Waste and ICSL over claims by the union of dangerous practices.
The GMB estimates that between 60 and 100 workers are injured in Islington every year due to poor training.
The problem is said to be an increasing workload and lack of experience in handling new technology.
