Green dream

HUNDREDS of Islington residents have taken up the council’s Climate Change Challenge by taking five simple steps in their daily lives to help save the environment.
Changes such as turning off appliances left on standby and washing clothes at 30 degrees, all form part of Islington’s drive to reduce CO2 emissions by 55,000 tonnes by 2010.
Residents sign up by texting “challenge” along with their names to 60777.
The 350 people signed up are set to save 200 tonnes of CO2 – the weight of a Boeing 747.
Other steps people can take include: turning down their thermostat by one degree, which saves 325kg of CO2 per year, fitting energy saving light bulbs and cycling for shorter journeys.
Wendy Baverstock, from Manor Gardens, N7, is among those taking part. “Turning down the thermostat and changing a light bulbs is no hassle – and it makes a huge impact on our environment.
“Cycling around Islington is actually faster than the car.”
