Teacher’s long-running marathon mission

A TEACHER hopes to make life easier for children with disabilities by running the London Marathon.
Georgina Stavri, a PE teacher at Hungerford Primary School for nine years, is taking part in the April 13 event to raise money for Whizz Kidz, a charity that provides mobility aids for disabled children.
Her school is in the process of integrating with neighbouring specialist school, The Bridge School.
For four years Ms Stavri, 41, who lives in Tabley Road, Holloway, has tried unsuccessfully to win a ballot place for the 26-mile event. Now, to ensure she takes part, she must raise £1,500 for the charity.
A fundraiser staged last month to mark her 41st birthday raised £180. Her next fundraiser is a Valentine’s Ball, which is being held in the school’s main hall on Friday, February 15. Arsenal Football Club has agreed to donate an, as yet, mystery item for an auction.
Pupils at the school in Hungerford Road are tracking their teacher’s training progress on a noticeboard in the reception foyer, which is updated each week with her distances and times. On Sunday, she completed her first 15-mile run. Of her training regime, she said: “It’s strenuous. You have to discipline yourself with your diet and take the right vitamins.”
