Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 8 February 2008

MP wins my backing

• I’ve never written to a letters page before, but I thought I would because I really didn’t understand why in the Tribune all the Lib Dems were getting so nasty at the different politicians involved with the post office in Essex Road (A bit late for MP to enlist in campaign to save post office, January 25).
I’m not into politics but I did speak to Labour MP Emily Thornberry last week when she came round my building to talk about the post office. She was saying it makes no sense to close Essex Road since it is always busy, and I agree with her completely.
Emily showed me letters she had written to the Royal Mail and the Post Office, and she said she was speaking to people in the government about it too.
If the council’s running a campaign too I’d be happy to sign its petition, though I’ve never seen the Lib Dems around here.

Address supplied

• I was interested to read the latest tirade from Labour councillor Barry Edwards against the Lib Dems (Let’s keep politics out of battle to save post office, February 1).
I’m sure I’m not the only one to think that it’s a fair cop to hold our local government to account when they have not delivered what people want or what they promised.
However, the point that seems to have been missed by Cllr Edwards in relation to the latest round of post office closures, which threatens to affect thousands of people in our borough, is that the closure programme is a national government initiative led by his very own Labour administration.
The most basic of searches on the Post Office website outlines how the closure programme came into being, so I fail to understand why he’s trying – and fortunately failing – to score cheap political points by linking a national, Labour-government led programme to the Lib Dems in Islington.
Bit of a nerve, if you ask me.
Still, why stop there? Perhaps we can expect future letters criticising Councillor Lucy Watt, the environment lead member for the Lib Dems, for the current state of global warming?
Perhaps Councillor Marisha Ray could hold her hands up to being the driving force behind ID cards?
So please, Cllr Edwards, get your facts straight. The strength of your argument is as gossamer-thin as my old gran’s underpants.
