Legal battle to save the Mall

TRADERS at the flagship Mall in Camden Passage are about to instruct a barrister to launch a legal challenge against a July eviction order by their landlords.
At the same time landlord London Associated Properties (LAP) are seeking permission to alter the interior of the listed building, a former tramshed, regarded as Camden Passage’s jewel in the crown.
Up to 40 antiques traders are being evicted after 25 years.
Labour Councillor Martin Klute said that if planning permission is refused by Islington Council to alter the building then there is no reason to evict the traders.
“So far we’ve heard a lot of talk from the leader of Islington Council, Lib Dem Councillor James Kempton, but no action,” Cllr Klute said.
Joining the campaign to save the famous tourist attraction, residents in nearby Duncan Terrace even suggested a fund raising appeal to buy The Mall back from the developer.
But Cllr Klute added: “It wouldn’t work if the developer didn’t want to sell.”
A rumour was also was also doing the rounds that suggested that LAP may just evict the traders and leave the Mall empty until such time as planning permission is approved.
Cllr Klute said: “My belief is that the owners are willing to manipulate the planning system.
“They don’t appear to have any respect for the area or council policy. They are purely motivated by profit.”
Mike Weedon of the Camden Passage Association said there is tremendous support for the Mall.
“We’ve been on TV and radio,” he added, “And all our local politicians support us.
“But we’re dealing with a huge company whop appear to specialise in getting rid of small businesses.
