I miss my ‘smoke’
• AS an ex-smoker of 10 years standing, I nevertheless dislike the new laws relating to smoking in public places. They have the unmistakable whiff of creeping bureaucratic fascism – the extended monitoring systems to preserve and guard our glorious democratic safety from mountebanks and footpads.
My own local pub has established a loose, tent-shaped, wind-blown corner with a kind of soft Perspex window so that you peer towards some dim, foggy world while you make the most of the inclement weather and try to enjoy your gasper in relative peace.
My beef against the new legal arrangements is that, after 10 years free from the noxious weed, I could go to the pub under the pretext of having a “slow one” simply in order to manoeuvre myself into a situation where I could enjoy a good passive smoke and no awkward questions asked.
