Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 25 January 2008

Expel kids with knives

• IT makes depressing reading to see a defence lawyer arguing that school heads should have less power to expel children who carry knives (Top solicitor calls for school justice, January 18).
Young people must understand that if they carry knives in school, then they will be kicked out.
We will only stop young people carrying knives if they think the risks of carrying one are greater than the risk of not – and that means getting tough. But expelled pupils must – and do – get help from referral units to carry on their education and to try to turn them around.
Cllr RICHARD WATTS
Labour children’s spokesman
