Focus on crime fight
• INSPECTOR Steve Riley has expressed concern that the message that crime is falling does not seem to be getting through to the public (Spread the word, our streets are safer, January 11).
As a member of that public I can say that I am wary about such claims because they are made using figures of reported crime. A lot more crime is not actually being reported these days, for a number of reasons.
For example, fraud arising from credit card theft has spiralled and the police are not interested in fraudulent credit card transactions, telling us we should take it up with the bank concerned.
Insp Riley says police are thinking of advertising to get the good news over to people. Please, please do not misuse public funds in this way. We are used to political organisations wasting money on telling us how wonderful they are and we don’t need that either.
Use public money for its intended purpose – in this case for fighting crime – not the dissemination of doubtful information just to make people feel better.
