Orwell, our treasure
• I ENJOYED Gerald Isaaman’s review of the list of “50 greatest British writers since 1945” in which he applauds the contribution of Camden authors (Camden’s literary goldmine, but look who they left out, January 11).
I agree that it would have been nice to see George Orwell at number one but, in listing the various sites in north London that bear commemorative plaques to the great man, I was surprised that he failed to mention the plaque at 27 Canonbury Square, where Orwell moved in 1944.
It was shortly after his move to Islington that Animal Farm was published, and while living there he wrote 1984. Orwell not only saw his two most famous novels published while living in Islington but he also died there.
Orwell was an Islington treasure – not part of Camden’s “literary goldmine”.
