Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 18 January 2008

Homeless lose centre

• THE east area committee with a membership of councillors chaired by Lib Dem councillor Rhodri Jamieson-Ball has agreed a plan for new housing on the site of 393 Highbury Quadrant, currently a homeless reception centre and originally, 30 years ago, an old people’s home. I recall as a visitor having lunch in the dining room with the 90 or so residents.
Lib Dem executive councillor Terry Stacy has said the reception centre was “an awful place”. Presumably why he thinks it should be demolished. I’m reminded of Chris Pryce, who defected from the Labour Party to the SDP and talked in a similar way about a disused seamen’s hostel in Tower Hamlets. When Labour were in power they took their duties to the homeless seriously rather then close something down at the drop of a hat.
