Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 4 January 2008

Who looks after carers?

• THERE are just under 14,000 carers in Islington, 11,000 of whom are of working age.
Islington’s carers suffer the problems common to all carers – loss of earnings, low income and isolation. They are almost twice as likely as non-carers to be in poor health.
About 5,000 people move into and out of a caring role in Islington every year, creating a real need for good advice and information.
Islington’s carers alone save the economy almost £200 million by the value of the care they provide unpaid.
We welcome the progress made for carers, but information is still the key to genuine choice.
Our free booklet, Looking after someone 2007/08: a guide to carers’ rights and benefits, can be obtained by calling our helpline on 0808 808 7777 or by visiting www.carersuk.org.

Chief executive, Carers UK
