Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 28 December 2007

Saved from its saviour

• LIB Dem council leader James Kempton is trying to paint himself as the saviour of the tree at Highbury Corner, but if he was a bit more honest, he would admit he signed off the plan for it to be chopped down in the first place (Saved… plane tree that survived bombing, December 21).
When the issue of the tree came up at west area committee and the residents made their opposition clear, Cllr Kempton was forced to admit he had chaired the very meeting of the council’s management board where the plans had been agreed.
It makes me happy when the council is able to admit its mistakes, so I’m glad the tree has now been saved. But, as far as I can see, all Cllr Kempton has done is save the tree from himself.
CLLR JOAN COUPLAND
Labour, St Mary’s ward
