Inquiry into axing of ‘wonderful trees’

FOR more than 50 years the two magnificent 50ft lime trees flourished in a back garden in Holloway.
Until last week when, within minutes, they were reduced to logs, at the hands of a chainsaw gang working in Hillmarton Road.
This week tree officers from Islington Council are investigating the removal of the trees which residents believe had protected status.
Resident Mal Maclearnon, who lives in Hartham Road, said that the first he knew the trees were being removed was when he heard the sound of a chainsaw.
He added: “I looked out the window. One minute they were there – next they were logs and being carted away. I was shocked. There was no consultation. I understand there was a suggestion that the trees may have caused subsidence.
“We’ve all enjoyed looking at these wonderful trees over the years. During the summer when they are in full bloom they are leafy and colourful and in the winter they give a certain distinction and charm to the area. They also offered privacy, and reduced noise from flats or main road.”
Lib Dem executive member for leisure and equalities Councillor Ruth Polling said: “The council is investigating the circumstances behind the removal of these two trees and will be considering enforcement action.”
