Man falls 40ft down refuse shaft

A MAN had to be rescued by the fire brigade when he fell 40 feet down a refuse shaft on Monday.
The agency worker was dumping rubbish at the Islington Council tip in Cottage Road on Monday afternoon when the accident happened.
He is recovering in Whittington Hospital, Archway with two broken vertebrae.
Three fire engines were called to the Recycling Centre, off Caledonian Road, at 2pm where they helped the man to safety using a ladder.
Gary Doolan from the GMB trade union said: “He is lucky to be alive. We are not sure what he was doing out of the van, but he shouldn’t have been there. We will be taking legal action because this looks like a breach of health and safety.”
The council were unable to comment.
