Pushchairs or prams?
• MARY Cosh is quite right about “4x4 prams” (Keep prams off buses, November 30). At one time even small pushchairs had to be folded on public transport, and I never understood why that rule was dropped.
Now they have grown bigger and bigger and evolved into prams. I worry particularly about the inconvenience caused by buggies on Tube escalators. Anything larger than half the width of the escalator dangerously narrows the space left for people (me) wishing or needing to walk up and down. This could be tragic in an emergency.
Bus drivers should use their powers to insist that pushchairs are folded when necessary – when there are other pushchairs, a wheelchair, passengers with shopping trolleys or luggage or just a large number of people.
If you are lucky enough to get a seat on a bus you have to watch that your clothes are not dirtied or damaged by these extra-large wheels of extra-large prams.
I suggest we have a definition of what is a pushchair and what is a pram.
I tried to persuade a Transport for London committee that it should arrange a “kite mark’’ maximum discussion, but to no avail. I’d be extremely grateful if our Islington MPs would consider bringing this up with TfL and in Parliament.
