Celebrities set to kick off festive season by switching on lights

CELEBRITIES across Islington will be braving the cold to turn on the borough’s “green” Christmas lights, the Tribune can reveal.
Stars of radio, TV and fashion, from Clive Anderson to Sadie Frost, are among those performing the switch-ons in Islington’s town centres in the run-up to Christmas.
But, in accordance with Islington’s ambition to become the greenest borough in London, all lights will feature low-energy LED fittings and are powered by energy bought on a green tariff.
The narrow streets of Camden Passage in Angel will be illuminated by Sadie Frost, one of the area’s very own celebrity traders, at 4.30pm on December 1.
The festivities start at 3pm when Father Christmas will drop by and entrants for the “Winning Windows” competition face the judges.
Next week, Thursday, November 29 at 5pm, indie radio station XFM DJs Alex Zane and “Cheeky” Pete Donaldson will be switching on the lights at the Nag’s Head shopping centre on the junction of Holloway Road and Seven Sisters Road. Islington’s deputy leader Councillor Terry Stacy talked the DJs into making an appearance live on radio after the duo penned a musical tribute to Holloway Road traders.
Children from Grafton Primary School will brighten up the streets with their own lantern procession and visitors can enjoy free mulled wine and mince pies. A Continental market will also be running until December 3.
Next Friday (November 30), the mayor of Islington Barbara Smith will turn on the lights at Archway Methodist Church as well as marking the lighting improvements to the Archway Triangle. The triangle now features new planting, seating, paving, fencing and a lighting design by Lighting Designer of the Year 2006 Speirs and Major, whose projects include St Paul’s Cathedral. The fun starts at 4pm with live music, Christmas carols and free mince pies.
Broadcaster and writer Clive Anderson will set Highbury Barn twinkling on Saturday December 1 from 5.45pm.
And on Sunday December 9 Elthorne Regeneration will provide carols and refreshments to the Lights of Hope Peace Garden, Elthorne Park, Hornsey Rise.
Cllr Stacy said: “We’ve already shown Islington is more than a match for the West End for party venues and specialist shopping.
“Now our Christmas lights have just as much star appeal thanks to our celebrity guests. Residents love our lights – they give a unique atmosphere and make a shopping trip or night out in our town centres that bit special.”
