‘Green police’ hit the streets they aim to clean up

ISLINGTON’S new “green police” went into action for the first time this week.
The nine-strong team of street environment wardens will combat anti-social behaviour. In their distinctive red uniforms, they will deal with everything from litter, graffiti and dog-fouling to fly-tipping and rough sleepers.
Senior street environment warden Frank Quammie said: “Our core duty is to educate and advise people but if necessary we will issue fixed penalty notices too, for example up to £80 for riding a bike on a pavement.”
Deployed in four key areas – Angel, Finsbury, Nag’s Head and Archway – the wardens had two days training last week, including dealing with conflict, before going on the beat.
Liberal Democrat executive member for environment Councillor Lucy Watt said: “Residents told us they wanted safer and cleaner neighbourhoods.
So we’ve made a major investment to deploy nine highly-visible wardens where they are most needed.”
She added: “When streets are clear of dog dirt and dumped rubbish and residents understand we’ll tackle problems promptly, it restores a sense of civic pride.”
