Civilians killed during the London blitz are remembered as mayor leads tributes to our war dead

ISLINGTON’S Mayor Barbara Smith led the borough’s Remembrance Day interfaith service and parade on Sunday.
In addition to those who died in the armed services, it is estimated that more than 1,000 Islington civilians were killed during the Blitz bombing of London between September 1940 and May 1941 which left 43,000 civilians dead across the city.
Cllr Smith said: “We remembered not only the fallen of the First and Second World Wars but also those who lost their life in more recent conflicts.”
Residents observed a two-minute silence.
The service was accompanied by a brass quintet from the Guildhall School of Music.
Veterans of the Royal British Legion and HM Armed Forces also attended.
This was followed by a service at Spa Green War Memorial and a wreath laying ceremony at the Memorial Arch of Manor Gardens.
