Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 9 November 2007

Cut parking bay fines

• UNLIKE parking permit charges, parking penalties are set London-wide and have to be agreed by all boroughs.
So it’s rich for Labour councillor James Murray to complain about Islington’s parking fines. As Councillor Lucy Watt revealed last week, she tried to get other boroughs to agree to reduce the fine for parking in a resident’s bay without a permit. This is the penalty that particularly hits visitors and deliverers, causing most misery.
Parking in a residents’ bay without a permit is not dangerous and should get a lower fine than parking on yellow lines or zigzags.
I believe most residents would support reducing the fine for this offence.
It was Labour and Tory-led boroughs who failed to support the change.
Cllr Murray would be better off asking his Labour colleagues across London to back Islington on this instead of attacking the Lib Dems, who are trying to get it right.
