Street’s bad vibrations
• OUR street is littered with speed cushions (as opposed to speed tables or full-width humps), which are similar (in design and effect) to the moguls found on freestyle skiing slopes.
They cause erratic driving instead of safer driving, and they have no calming influence on well-sprung vehicles or vehicles with wide axles.
To make matters worse, a typical skip lorry has two wheels on its front axle and four on the rear axle, so their front wheels can be steered cleanly over these cushions but their rear wheels invariably collide with them.
Everybody loses out – the lorries and speed cushions are damaged, house structures are weakened, pedestrians are put in danger, and the whole street suffers from noise and vibration.
