Clubs bring abuse rise
• I AM not against pole dancing itself. I don’t think politicians should be in the business of telling people how to spend their evenings, but I, like many others, am deeply concerned about the planned pole dancing at the Archway Tavern (We must all oppose lap-dancing club, October 19).
Archway Tavern is central to our area, a landmark pub, and a really popular live music venue. Frankly, pole dancing and lap dancing are the last things we want there.
Despite how it looks if you only drive down the A1, Archway is a residential area with many young families. It’s fair to say that most people would rather not live near a pole-dancing club, and none of us wants our children, especially our daughters, having to walk past it on their way to and from school.
One club in Bethnal Green has a huge neon sign depicting a nude woman dancing on a pole. Is that the kind of image we want illuminating Archway too?
With the regeneration of King’s Cross, many residents are seriously worried that we might see elements of the sex trade dispersed from there.
The last thing we want is for Archway Tavern to be a beacon that brings other, even seedier, things to the area. We definitely don’t want Archway to be packed with so-called “gentlemen’s entertainment”. That wasn’t the regeneration of Archway we were looking for.
Much more seriously, I understand researchers from London Metropolitan University have carried out research which shows, unsurprisingly, that the presence of pole-dancing or table-dancing clubs in an area increases abuse of and violence against women in that area. On that basis I call on everyone in the area to sign the petition against pole dancing.
