Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 October 2007

We must bridge gulf

• I WAS surprised to see you put me down as a Labour councillor in your paper (‘Apartheid’ that divides rich and poor under fire, October 12). After a year as the Mayor of Islington I thought you would know that I was a Lib Dem, but I needed to clear this up.
I agreed with Andy Murphy last week that it’s really important to mix up social housing with private housing. It’s important that we get big family housing and the development offered that, but we also want those children to grow up with good role models around them and seeing different lifestyles.
They’ve managed it at the new Gainsborough Studios so why can’t we do it in Bunhill? My ward has 70 per cent social housing and, with the huge gulf between the super rich and the poor living on the fringes of the City, it is more important than ever that we try to encourage mixed communities in Islington through planning.
CLLR JYOTI VAJA
Lib Dem, Bunhill
