Petitioner: David Holt
‘Make this killer junction safer’

AN urgent call has been made for safety improvements at a King’s Cross accident blackspot.
A woman cyclist was killed in an accident involving a lorry at the junction of Penton Rise and Pentonville Road in March.
Now David Holt, manager of the University College London student housing campus, has launched a petition calling for safety measures at the junction near his office. He said: “I’ve been here since January 2000 and I estimate there have been more than 50 incidents at the junction.
“Part of the problem is that motorists drive like maniacs from the top of Pentonville Road to the junction. At the junction there is often confusion. There’s a bus lane which continues straight to King’s Cross but the flow of traffic appears to go left into Penton Rise.
“Cyclists who hug the inside lane want to go straight on to King’s Cross but are hit by traffic turning left.” Transport for London (TfL) has plans to change the road layout at the bottom of Penton Rise, where it meets King’s Cross Road, but has yet to tackle the safety issue at the Penton Rise-Pentonville Road junction.
Mr Holt said: “I’ve written directly to TfL. They have said a safety study has been completed and options are being considered. But when?
“I would like to see better signage so motorists and cyclists know exactly what they are doing when they approach the junction. Then I’d like to see speed cameras and cameras to stop people jumping the red lights.”
