‘We won’t be bullied’ warning

A WINTER of discontent could cripple Islington after union leaders revealed plans to hold a summit which could result in industrial action by teachers, Royal Mail staff and Town Hall workers, writes Roisin Gadelrab.
The November 1 meeting will see Islington’s union representatives thrash out plans to coordinate industrial action over unsatisfactory pay deals and working hours.
Islington North Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn and Mark Dolan, from the Communication Workers Union, have been invited to speak at the meeting for public sector union members.
Islington National Union of Teachers assistant secretary Ken Muller said: “Public sector workers do not want to see schools, job centres, the postal service and housing offices disrupted. We choose to do these jobs because we want to provide a service to the public. But we will not be bullied or blackmailed into working more for less pay or see our services handed to fat-cat businessmen without a fight.” He said Islington Trades Council is hoping to coordinate action across the sectors.
The meeting is at Islington Town Hall at 7.30pm on November 1.
