Smoking debate lights up centre

STUDENTS have staged a spirited debate on the merits of raising the age when cigarettes can be bought legally.
Students from City and Islington College entertained an audience at the Centre for Health, Social and Child Care in Holloway with role plays and presentations last week. Among those watching were Mayor Barbara Smith and Lib Dem council leader James Kempton.
The age at which smokers can buy cigarettes was raised to 18 on Monday.
Students Fatmata Kamara and Bola Balogun hosted the event, which explored the potential impact of raising the age.
Emily Carr, from Islington Primary Care Trust, said: “We have worked with the college before, raising awareness of the dangers of smoking, and students have been really engaging. We offer support for students if they need help giving up smoking.”
According to a student-led survey, four out of five young people support the age ban being raised.
