Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 5 October 2007

Red flag still flies

• IT was great to see a review of my recent book, Ramparts of Resistance, in my own local paper! But I would like to counter the rather despondent message conveyed (Demise of unions has set us back to the 19th century, September 21).
Ramparts is actually quite an optimistic book, ending with a call to the workplace union activists it sees as crucial to the movement’s future to “build a class-conscious leadership within the working class – ready, perhaps, for the next upsurge”.
Unrealistic? I don’t think so. Any meeting of the newly-formed Islington Trades Council, of which I am proud to be a delegate, will give you a flavour of the possibilities, with a range of committed activists from across the movement meeting to organise action on issues of concern to Tribune readers – council housing, academies, hospital closures and low pay. So let’s keep the red flag flying, even if we don’t see much of it outside the Town Hall these days!
