Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 28 September 2007

Threat to our MPs

• AS the possibility of a General Election looms larger it is interesting to look at the positions of our two MPs, Jeremy Corbyn and Emily Thornberry, in the light of recent by-election results in our part of north London.
A couple of weeks ago there was a by-election in Stonebridge ward of Brent, a much more solid Labour area than Islington.
Obviously, Labour held onto the seat (1,432 against the Lib Dems’ 864). But the swing to the Lib Dems – how much their vote increased since the last election – was a staggering 16.2 per cent while Labour’s share of the vote actually fell. George Galloway’s Respect also increased its vote by 8.6 per cent. If this were to happen in Islington at the next General Election we would have two new MPs.
Ms Thornberry must be feeling particularly vulnerable as only a one per cent swing to the Lib Dems would see her facing defeat.
