Four years for garage robbery

A YOUTH who was part of an armed robbery at a motorbike garage in Holloway has been put behind bars for four-and-a-half years.
Jerome Greenaway, 19, of Jenner Road, Hackney, was part of a four-man gang who blinded a member of staff with noxious gas before holding him at knifepoint and beating him up at the Landseer Road garage on March 6.
The 64-year-old victim suffered severe bruising and swelling to his right eye as well as numerous cuts and gashes to his face.
He had been locking up the garage for the night when the gang pounced.
They held him captive for more than half an hour before stealing four motorbikes and four mobile phones.
Summing up at Wood Green Crown Court, Judge Anthony Ansell said Greenaway’s age, the fact he was not the instigator and his guilty plea all contributed to a shorter than usual sentence.
Greenaway was caught after he failed to stop for Hackney police officers, who suspected his bike was stolen.
After a police chase, the youth abandoned his bike and was found hiding in a garden.
Detective Inspector Mark Gower, from the Priority Crime Unit, said: “This is an excellent example of victim courage in bringing this matter to trial.
“The investigating officer carried out a meticulous investigation, exploring all available forensic possibilities.”
Greenaway admitted robbery but denied having a knife or seeing a weapon being used.
