Cost of £45m Tube lifts queried

A controversial plan to install £45 million lifts at Archway Tube station sparked major concerns this week.
Transport for London (TfL) wants to provide two lifts, members of Islington Council’s north area committee were told last week.
A project, due to start in 2009 and be completed by 2012, would make the station more accessible for the disabled by installing lifts alongside existing stairs and escalators.
TfL’s target is to make a third of the Tube network “step-free” by 2013.
Labour councillor Janet Burgess said: “Obviously, everyone welcomes increased access for the disabled but a number of councillors expressed concern about the expense of the project.”
She added: “There are also worries that the plans could hold up redevelopment in the Archway area in general as the work may take up parts of Archway Mall for a few years.”
Members of the committee complained about the absence of a joined-up approach to improvements to the area, particularly concerning the gyratory road system, which has been named as the fifth most congested spot in London.
Plans for the station work will be on show at Archway Methodist Church, in Archway Close, from Wednesday, September 26, until Saturday, September 29, between 8am and 7.30pm Wednesday to Friday and 10am-5pm on Saturday.
