Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 21 September 2007

Politicians on move

• I was interested to read recent coverage in the local and national press about the expanding property portfolio of my local MP, Emily Thornberry. I see that the half-million pound-plus property snapped up by her hubby was to provide a cheap place to stay for some young people.
How great that one of those in need is James Murray, the Labour councillor in Barnsbury who, until moving into Emily’s pad, actually lived in Barnsbury. Well, no more, as that act has ensured that none of the three Labour councillors representing Barnsbury actually lives there.
James’s last noteworthy act was a few months ago at a planning meeting where he failed to vote against building flats on a small patch of green space on the Barnsbury estate, despite loud opposition from residents. I only wish I lived in a ward with councillors that cared.

• SOAS student Zafar Abbas wrote about the local MP (Priced out of town,
September 14).

Like many students, Zafar has an online profile – and he has posted on his profile one of his favourite quotes: “Never let the facts get in the way of a good essay.”
Obviously this approach qualifies him perfectly for his current job as intern in the Lib Dem office at Islington Town Hall.
I am sure his new employers saw this quote and put him straight onto letter-writing duty.
