£250,000 boost for study into future of gyratory traffic system

TRANSPORT for London has given £250,000 towards a study that will look at the future of the Archway gyratory system, it was announced this week.
The new money will allow planners to examine regeneration options for the area and will ensure that TfL makes work on the gyratory a priority.
A final decision on whether to scrap the gyratory system or to improve it is expected by March 2009. Labour London Assembly member Jennette Arnold has welcomed the TfL cash, which was awarded following pressure on London Mayor Ken Livingstone from her and Junction ward Labour councillor Janet Burgess.
Ms Arnold said: “Earlier this year I pressed the Mayor on why TfL had not assigned a project manager to sort out the dangerous gyratory but was told we first needed a developer.
“I am delighted then that TfL has now allocated a team to examine the options and has 0ºsecured £250,000 of funding.”
Ms Arnold has worked closely on the gyratory campaign with Cllr Burgess, Islington North Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn and Better Archway Forum.
She said: “But we are not resting on our laurels. There is still a long way to go. I have been asked to sit on the committee that will explore options for the interchange and look forward to working together with Janet, Jeremy and residents to ensure we get the safe, attractive solution we all want.”
Cllr Burgess added: “The agreement takes us a big step closer to sorting out the messy gyratory system.”
