Darren Hughes
Mother’s plea a year after son died in road accident

THE mother of a cyclist killed in Holloway has launched a fresh appeal for witnesses to the accident on the first anniversary of his death.
Darren Hughes was cycling in Holloway Road when he was killed in a collision with a car that failed to stop.
His mother, Gail Furlong, spoke this week of her anguish following the accident.
Mrs Furlong said: “The loss of Darren has devastated the family. It is still hitting me very hard – the stress brought by his death has made me ill.”
She added: “It’s the not knowing what actually happened to him that is stopping us from coming to terms with his death.”
Mr Hughes, 31, from Caledonian Road, Holloway, was hit by a maroon Jaguar XJ Sport at the junction of Holloway Road and Manor Gardens at 9.05pm on September 5 last year.
He was taken to the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, where he died from multiple injuries.
The Jaguar, registration P638YGF, failed to stop at the scene and continued north along Holloway Road before turning right into Marlborough Road. It was later found abandoned in Sussex Way.
Detective Sergeant David Hindmarsh, of the Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are very keen to speak to anyone who witnessed this collision or the vehicle as it made off along Holloway Road.
“Without the account of the driver of the vehicle, we will never know what happened that day and be able to explain to Darren’s mother why her son died.”
A 43-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving remains on police bail.
Anyone with any information should call Euston Traffic Garage on 020 7388 6806 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
