Staff have private care
• I WAS unpleasantly surprised to see the article stating that staff from the consulates of Cyprus, Kuwait and Qatar have failed to pay more than £1 million for treatment (Patient who owes hospital £90,000, August 24).
The diplomatic and consular staffs do not use the NHS as the government of Cyprus provides private care.
Cyprus has a long relationship with two hospitals, which provide medical care for government-sponsored patients who are routinely sent to the United Kingdom for treatment. The flow of patients is constant and, as such, it is normal that at all times there would be outstanding current charges.
The two hospitals have assured the Cyprus High Commission that they value their relationship with Cyprus and have no complaints concerning payment of medical bills. A simple phone call to the Cyprus High Commission, prior to the publication of the article, would very easily have clarified the issue.
