Mayor hails football’s young stars

ONE of the borough’s best-loved annual football competitions was played out on Friday with Islington Mayor Barbara Smith cheering from the sidelines.
The Islington Community Cup, organised by the Access to Sports Project and Aquaterra Leisure, sees teams of boys from estates, youth projects, organised clubs and schools bid to be crowned champions each summer.
This month was no different, with 33 teams clashing in fiercely contested heats in a bid to reach finals day at Market Road in Barnsbury.
That day dawned on Friday with 18 finalists going head-to-head. The Saints, a team of friends from St Aloysius College in Archway took the junior trophy, and Actual Soccer lifted the senior cup.
The competition was held in partnership with Homes for Islington, Islington Young People’s Service, the PAYP programme, Islington Greenspace and Leisure, Arsenal Positive Futures, Islington Strategic Partnership, London Summer of Sport and the Islington Development Partnership.
