Fears over late drinks at church

A CHURCH that doubles as a venue for pop concerts has sparked concern with its plans for later drinking and music.
The Union Chapel in Compton Avenue, Islington, has staged shows by international stars such as Bjork and Rufus Wainwright.
Residents living near the grade II-listed Gothic church claim plans to extend its licence for alcohol and music by half an hour on weekdays and an hour at weekends will lead to an increase in drinking, disturbance and even “defecation” in the area.
Currently, drinking is allowed to 11pm and music until midnight.
David McComb, who lives in nearby Edwards Cottages, said: “Extended opening hours will inevitably lead to more drinking, disturbance and noise.”
Another neighbour, Miranda Dart, said: “There is not the police presence which would prevent the greater use of Compton Avenue for urination and defecation.”
Union Chapel project manager Peter Stapleton assured residents there were no plans to have events every night. The licensing application was “just a formality to allow more flexibility”.
He said: “We’re very conscious of the fact we’re in a residential area. All music is acoustic and we finish all shows at 11pm.
“This is a community centre – it’s here for the people of Islington.”
