Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 31 August 2007

Costly questions

• COUNCILLOR Rhodri Jamieson-Ball should not be so proud that Lib Dem MP Lynne Featherstone has asked so many more written questions than MP Emily Thornberry (Why MP is second best, August 24).
Written questions should be used effectively by parliamentarians to hold the government to account. In the last few years, the number of questions asked by MPs has risen dramatically. It is not clear why this is the case – though a cynic might suggest this is an attempt to look busy, by claiming a high count on the online league tables of sites like theyworkforyou.
com.
Ms Featherstone’s written questions have cost the taxpayer more than £65,000 in the last year alone, including the cost of about £130 for the answer to her insightful inquiry to the Home Secretary as to which police authorities have used the services of a psychic.
