GCSE results still the capital’s second worst
• MANY congratulations to all staff and pupils at Islington’s schools on the GCSE results (‘It was worth all the sacrifices,’ insist delighted GCSE pupils, August 24). Last week will have ended months of hard work and anxious waiting for many students, parents and teachers.
Islington still has a long way to go before we get the kind of results our borough deserves. For every three children who attend Islington’s schools, two will leave without five good GCSEs, including maths and English.
Our results are still well below the national average. In fact, research suggests Islington still gets the second-worst results in London.
A closer look at the results show that, although A-Cs are going up, the number of overall passes has actually gone down, signalling a rise in the number of children leaving school without any qualifications at all in important subjects.
These are more than mere statistics. Behind the percentages are real children who will be affected by these results for the rest of their lives.
Lib Dem council chiefs have been swift to pat themselves on the back after the results became known. But their school report card should be marked “must do better”.
