The doodlebug was the buzz bomb
• IN your article (Memorial for V2 victims moves closer, August 10), you described a V2 rocket as a doodlebug.
In fact, the doodlebug was the flying bomb or buzz bomb, because it buzzed loudly while powered and you were safe so long as you heard the buzz. You were in danger as soon as the buzz stopped – that was when the bomb would fall. With the V2 rocket there was no warning – they would fall swiftly and silently. The first V2 rocket hit London on September 8 1944, a date I know well – my date of birth.
