Young patients hear African choir’s songs of protest

A renowned blind choir from Africa performed a moving concert of freedom songs at Moorfields Eye Hospital on Tuesday.
Twenty members of Milton Margai School for the Blind from Freetown, Sierra Leone, sang anti-slavery anthems to young patients at the newly-opened Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre.
Some of the children in the choir were born blind, some lost eyesight through disease or accident – and some through injuries during the 11-year rebel war that devastated the country.
The choir has already performed at Canterbury Cathedral and the final concert of its UK tour will be on Friday, August 17, at Westminster Hall in front of an expected audience of 2,000.
The Milton Margai School, which is named after the country’s first prime minister, is the only registered school for the blind in Sierra Leone.
