Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 3 August 2007

Homes are on the way

• BRIDGET Fox wrote a venomous letter attacking MP Emily Thornberry, apparently because of Emily’s high-profile campaign for more affordable housing (Debt-free building, July 27).
Ms Fox should try a little harder to get her facts right. She claims Labour opposed the Arsenal scheme which has delivered new homes. As a former councillor, she should know that councillors are not supposed to follow a party whip on planning matters. Unlike the Lib Dems, Labour councillors voted on the Arsenal scheme according to their personal conscience and a majority of Labour councillors supported Arsenal’s original 2001 planning application.
Her claim that the government is not allowing councils to build housing was made in the same week in which the government announced new powers to build council housing in its housing green paper and gave a huge boost to Housing Corporation funding, which will allow many more new homes to be built for Islington residents who need them.
If Ms Fox really wants to see more housing which Islington people can afford, she will back the government’s proposals and Ms Thornberry’s campaigning on the issue.
CLLR RICHARD GREENING
Labour, Highbury West
