Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 27 July 2007

An office, not a shed

• I WAS surprised to read Barbara Wyatt’s views on Taverner and Peckett Square Tenant Management Organisation’s planning application (Homes: the votes speak, July 20).
The TMO is a tenant-led organisation which prides itself on representing the whole community. Our current office, a first-floor, one-bed flat, is not accessible to elderly residents, mums with buggies or wheelchair users.
A recent change in the law has required us to address this issue.
We have applied to refurbish a dilapidated ground-floor, two-bed flat as our office instead. There will be a cost to converting it, but that would have had to happen before it was let to anyone.
The costs will be shared between Homes for Islington (HfI) and the TMO and will not be charged to residents. Our old office will be refurbished and returned to the community to use as social housing.
Our management committee of residents fully supports us in making sure we meet our legal obligations in relation to residents and staff. Hence a “shed” just wouldn’t do!
