Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 July 2007

Milestone for estate

• CALEDONIAN Park Fun Day on Saturday was a big success.
It also marked the milestone of the first residents of the Market estate moving into their new homes.
Mayor of Islington Barbara Smith spent a lot of time talking to people about the progress on the estate and that was because there are so many positive things to share.
So I would like to take this opportunity to remember the late Jim Veal, the first chairman of Market Estate Tenants and Residents Association.
I remember some years back when Jim called a meeting with the interim managers of the estate and was trying to resolve a repairs problem for a tenant whose window had fallen out.
After patiently listening to the excuses, he said: “It needs to be done. Get up and do it.” To Jim and his family, our sincere appreciation.
Residents of the estate have come a long way. We have always said the regeneration of the estate is about more than bricks and mortar, it is about the people.
Many thanks to Southern Housing, Islington Greenspace and Higgins for a great day.
