Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 July 2007

Lost: one parking bay

• WE live in an elderly people’s home and on the roadway outside there used to be an area marked “Ambulance bay, keep clear”.
When we asked the council to repaint the letters they blasted off the markings. When we enquired when the markings were to be repainted we were told they had become illegal. We presume it makes the disabled parking bays and doctors’ parking bays illegal too.
The bay is in constant use, day and night, by bus ambulances and emergency ambulances, allowing the elderly and the disabled good access to the main door of the building.
We assume the council thinks the markings interfere with somebody’s human rights.
If this is the case, what about the human rights of the elderly and disabled who have to make in some cases a painful detour when getting in or out of ambulances?
With only two thin “polite” yellow lines outside now, every Tom, Dick or Harry can park there.
We even have disabled people parking there. We don’t mind but we are sure that if they knew they were blocking access they wouldn’t.
The latest people to intrude on the space are road workers, who have parked their hut, railings, rubble and even a lorry there.
When I approached the foreman, he was apologetic and said if it had been marked as an ambulance bay there was no way they would have used it.
This is just another example of the indifference shown towards the elderly and disabled by Islington Council.
