Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 July 2007

When experts’ views rule

• THE Lib Dems gave us another glimpse of their true colours on Tuesday evening when they used their casting vote to force Highbury residents to accept yet more development at the old Arsenal stadium.
From an original 550 flats we are now to have more than 730 at the gated community.
A council planning officer, who almost certainly never uses Arsenal Tube station at rush hour, told us that “the local infrastructure can cope” with this increase.
What is more, my Lib Dem planning committee colleagues cheerfully accepted unsubstantiated claims that there is ample spare capacity at local GPs’ surgeries, nurseries, schools and other essential services.
Once again “experts” have presented as fact things those of us who actually live here know to be rubbish. The utterly reasonable and valid objections of hundreds of Highbury residents were swept aside on Tuesday evening by a council “Listening to Islington”.
Cllr KATIE DAWSON
Green, Highbury West
