Hard-hat disguise for robber on run

A ROBBER hunted by police for two violent attacks evaded capture by disguising himself as a builder – complete with hard hat and high-visibility jacket – and hiding out on a Finsbury estate.
Marc Cayley, 23, who was wanted for robberies in Essex, was living in a flat on the Spa Green estate last year.
Every time Islington police came looking for him with an arrest warrant, he donned builders’ gear and clambering into scaffolding around the estate blocks.
A police source said: “The information we received is that he wasn’t working for the builders but wore a hard hat and yellow jacket to avoid detection when police came looking for him.
“When officers went to find him he just wasn’t there.
“He either had someone telling him they were coming or he could see they were coming and evade capture.”
Cayley was able to hide out for weeks while building work went on at the estate, where almost every block was covered in scaffolding.
It is unclear how Cayley got hold of the builders’ clothing or why no one alerted police.
Cayley was later stopped by police in Hackney and arrested for the robberies, one of which left his victim with brain damage.
Cayley, who appeared with accomplice Danny Stott, was jailed for three-and-a-half years at Chelmsford Crown Court in May, after pleading guilty to robbery.
Brian Potter, chairman of Islington Leaseholders’ Forum, has called for better security on estates where building work is being undertaken.
Islington CID, on 020 7704 1212, would like to hear from anyone with information about how Cayley managed to hide out for so long.
